frans lanting

Frans Lanting, hailed as one of the great nature photographers of our time, portrays wild creatures as ambassadors for the preservation of complete ecosystems. This unique view of wildlife, which lies at the heart of his work, provides some insight into why Mr. Lanting's photographs are so hauntingly beautiful.

In a review, The New York Times stated of his critically acclaimed book, Okavango, Africa's Last Eden, "He celebrates the land and its wildlife with spare, evocative prose and with photographs that are extraordinary in capturing motion, form and color." Thomas Kennedy, former Director of Photography of the National Geographic Society wrote, "As a chronicler of natural history today, Frans Lanting is a singular extraordinary talent. He has the mind of a scientist, the heart of a hunter, and the eyes of a poet." Not surprisingly, Lanting's work has appeared in virtually every major magazine in the world including National Geographic, Life, Audubon, Stern, Figaro, and GEO. Exhibits featuring his photographs have appeared at major museums in Paris, Milan, Tokyo, New York and
Amsterdam.

Lanting's work has been commissioned by National Geographic for such exclusive
assignments as a search for the last white rhinos in central Africa, and the first coverage
of the bonobo in the rain forest of the Congo Basin. His groundbreaking work in Madagascar led to his book Madagascar: A World Out of Time. In recognition of this breadth of work, Mark Wilson of the Boston Globe wrote: "Mr. Lanting is perhaps the most versatile wilderness photographer working today."

Born in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Frans Lanting makes his home in Santa Cruz,
California, when he is not in some remote corner of the world in search of nature's ambassadors.
