The American West

paul kozal

Intending to draw the viewer deeper into each image's depths, Paul's prints are small and intimate. Often a print is both sepia and selenium toned to enhance the subject's ethereal qualities. Many of the toned prints are then painstakingly painted with an expressive mastery that is unparalleled. So, though these photographs are made on black-and-white gelatin-silver or palladium papers, he transforms them into amazing color of gentle subtlety. The effects he achieves in his photographs are not like anyone else's.

His subject matter is almost entirely landscape - throw in a few buildings - of California and the Southwest. Just when the gallery felt it was safe to demand, "No more pictures of sand dunes! No more pictures of the St. Francis Church!" Paul proved them wrong.

Time and again, Kozal says something fresh and new about formerly ubiquitous subjects, whose perimeters are punctured by countless tripod holes.
