The Man behind the Gallery

the man behind the gallery

Edward G.L. Carter, Ph.D.

An entrepreneur, Dr. Carter has lived in dozens of countries and created many businesses in various industries from life insurance and mutual funds to shipping container leasing, hospitality, luxury speedboat building, and travel publishing. As well as heading the Edward Carter Galleries, he is also the Professor of Etiquette, and Hospitality and Tourism Management at Bangkok University International College in Bangkok, Thailand.

Throughout the years and achievements, Dr. Carter has continued to nurture his first love--the making, teaching, and collecting of fine photography. He became a private dealer in London in 1987, and in 1995 he established his own private gallery and photography teaching studio in New York. In early 1999, he launched his namesake gallery at 560 Broadway in the heart of SoHo. In a neighborhood filled with galleries, The Edward Carter Gallery proved a standout. Visually, the gallery space was unique. Unlike most galleries whose walls are glaringly white and whose bare floors reverberate every footstep, Carter's galleries were welcoming wombs of dark, wall-to-wall carpeting, and soft, padded, grey-flannel panels. Under the clean, revelatory lighting, the photographs were presented with great respect-as close to perfection as earthly possible.

However, following the downturn of business after the tragic events of September 11, 2001, combined with the increased effectiveness of the Internet, Dr. Carter decided to close the SoHo gallery in June 2003.

Now Dr. Carter can concentrate on what he does best--discovering talented artists around the world, organizing exhibits to show their work alongside Ansel Adams, and leveraging the Internet to bring superior service to his clients worldwide.

The fine art photography world greatly benefits from Edward Carter's extraordinary commitment, experience, and his vital encouragement of its artists. He is dedicated to championing the work of masters, such as Ansel Adams, as well as emerging artists who have something of consequence to say, and he is determined to raise the stakes on photography's behalf throughout the world.
